Trainers

Trainers are generally suitable for everyday wear, but it's best to rotate between different pairs to allow shoes to properly air out. For school-age children, check the uniform policy as some schools require specific footwear. Ensure the trainers provide proper support with cushioning and a flexible sole. For growing feet, trainers with room to grow (but not too much) are ideal. Look for breathable materials to keep little feet fresh.

Additionally, choose durable, easy-to-clean options, as kids can be tough on their shoes. If they’ll be using them for sports, opt for trainers with extra grip and stability for added support during active play.

It's best to leave a thumb's width (approximately 1-1.5cm) of space between the longest toe and the end of the trainer to allow for growth and natural foot expansion during the day. However, avoid sizing up too much as overly large trainers can cause trips and falls. The width is equally important - look for trainers that comfortably accommodate the widest part of the foot without pinching.

If you're unsure, it's always a good idea to have your child try on trainers at the end of the day when their feet are naturally a bit larger. This guarantees a better fit and comfort for all-day wear. Keep in mind that different brands may fit slightly differently!

You should always establish a proper cleaning routine by removing loose dirt with a soft brush after each wear. For canvas or fabric trainers, use a mild soap solution and a cloth or soft brush in circular motions. Rinse with a clean damp cloth, being careful not to saturate the trainers. For leather styles, wipe with a slightly damp cloth and use a gentle leather cleaner if needed. Allow trainers to air dry naturally away from radiators or direct sunlight - stuffing with newspaper helps maintain their shape whilst drying.

For stubborn stains, try a specialised cleaner designed for the material of the trainer. If the laces get dirty, you can wash them separately by soaking them in warm soapy water. Keep them fresh by using a foot spray or powder to prevent odours from building up after wearing them for a long time.
